It was September 2020, when my husband first told me about freelancing jobs after my arrival to the US on the spouse visa. Of course, I was getting bored at home due to a variety of reasons. The top reason was my first time living without siblings, friends, and above all parents(only me and my husband were together that was of course a blessing but due to pandemic we both were at home doing nothing at all times except cooking, eating, watching TV shows, thrillers, survival thrillers, adventures, historical plays and movies). Life was all chill but I wanted to earn something via the easiest mean at my own pace. Of course, pandemic made me so sluggish and easy going while staying at home at all times.
Though my husband told me about a wide range of freelancing platforms like fiverr, freelancer and Upwork etc. However, I found only Upwork the most authentic and reliable source to satisfy my thirst for writing. Others may definitely disagree with me depending on their personal experiences and reasons. But my reasons not to choose other forums were the following aspects :( they may have overcome these issues now but it was situation that time)
· no check and balance on those sites, if someone assigns any tasks and does not pay, you cannot do any legal action
· anyone without proving a proof of identity can make account.
· and lots of spam messages
and what made me choose Upwork was:
· no one can make you fool as Upwork takes action immediately and support is quite active(once I wrote something for a client and he ran away after making me accomplish the task. even when I didn’t start the contract as i was new and didn’t know, Upwork caught that person and he contacted me and paid)so Upwork is highly reliable
· Upwork suggests you not to accept offers if someone tries to contact outside the forum and it is then very safe.
· If a payment method is not verified from the recruiter then it is visible on the job posting and clear indication that job posting is a scam.
However, one factor that I don’t like about Upwork is its heavy deduction from every amount. For instance if you earned $5, Upwork can let you take $4 only. In case of $32, you will get $25 only. So it is high interest rate. But if it gives you safety then it is worth it.
Now apart from being reliable, Upwork makes it quite easy to make portfolios, impressive profiles, and demos to present your skills to people. Also, there are tons of jobs postings which can let you earn easily if you have got the relevant skills.
Moreover, even if you are not active on Upwork due to other tasks, Upwork platform lets recruiters send you invites and invites are significant for other reasons too:
· They don’t cost you any connects.(There is a ‘connect system’ on Upwork and for every job you apply you must have some connects)as a beginner, Upwork gives you 60 connects which are sufficient to apply for a number of jobs and make your profile visible as a newbie.
· once you accept the invite, you get the free connects which you can use to apply for more jobs easily.
